The Ideal Solution for Commercial HVAC Fan Replacement Applications

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Oct 18, 2018 2:45:00 PM

Aging Central Air Handling Units (AHUs) life expectancy can greatly benefit through Q-Pac fan retrofit solutions.  Common considerations:

  1. Are the AHU chamber casings in good shape?  Are they double wall?
  2. Is it time to replace compacted cooling and heating coils.
  3. Are you tired of the supply fan maintenance issues shutting down business.
  4. Was the mechanical room built  around the AHU?   Unit accessibility issues in limited access mechanical rooms often constrain replacement options.

Q-Pac Fan Retrofits are very competitive when looking at first cost, but the real value is downstream in maintenance, dependability,  and controls and energy management benefits.

Thermal Imaging for HVAC and IAQ Inspections

By Comprehensive Energy Services on May 23, 2018 7:32:00 AM

Thermal imaging cameras are powerful, non-contact tools for monitoring and diagnosing the condition of HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, and building envelopes.  These cameras help you identify problems early, document them immediately, and correct them quickly.  The longer system faults are ignored, the more serious and costly they are to repair.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) problems can stem from inadequate HVAC performance, moisture trapped in walls, mold growth on cold, damp surfaces and inadequate ventilation.  Many of these can be visualized and diagnosed, at least in part, with thermography to help solve these very serious—and common—problems.

Don't pay RTU replacement premiums this summer

Three Step RTU Planned Replacement Program:

A successful planned RTU replacement program saves energy and avoids costly emergency replacements. This approach allows standardization of equipment features, streamlines the process, reduces costs, and provides higher quality results.

If your HVAC equipment is nearing its end of life, about 12 to 15 years, and if it fails in the middle of the summer, you will likely end up paying a premium to repair or replace the unit.  The replacement unit may not have the right features, or even be the right size, because the need to restore air conditioning could force you to make short-term trade-offs.  Don't let this happen to you.

How to maintain a HVAC system for Legionella Control

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Jan 4, 2018 9:50:00 AM

Legionnaires' disease bacteria (LDB) cannot survive without water, and a properly operated, well-maintained HVAC system is unlikely to be a source of problems unless water contaminated with the bacteria enters the system.

Air conditioning units without humidifiers have not been identified as sources of LDB.  For a Legionnaires' disease outbreak to be linked directly with the HVAC system, LDB-contaminated water must enter the system, be aerosolized, and be delivered to building occupants.

CES Safety Talks About Trenching & Excavation Safety

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Jun 1, 2016 2:30:00 PM

It is CES goal to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards that may cause serious injury or death. Trenching and excavating can be one of these hazards when not complying with the trenching and excavation requirements of 29 CFR 1926.651 and 1926.652 or comparable OSHA-approved state plan requirements. Two workers are killed every month in trench collapses. An excavation is any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in an earth surface formed by earth removal. A trench is a narrow excavation (in relation to its length) made below the surface of the ground. In general, the depth is greater than the width in a trench excavation, however, the width of a trench (measured at the bottom) is not greater then 15 feet.

General Trenching and Excavation Rules

  • Keep heavy equipment away from trench edges.
  • Identify other sources that might affect trench stability.
  • Keep excavated soil (spoils) and other materials at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) from trench edges.
  • Know where underground utilities are located before digging.
  • Test for atmospheric hazards such as low oxygen, hazardous fumes and toxic gases when > 4 feet deep.
  • Inspect trenches at the start of each shift.
  • Inspect trenches following a rainstorm or other water intrusion.
  • Do not work under suspended or raised loads and materials.
  • Inspect trenches after any occurrence that could have changed conditions in the trench.
  • Ensure that personnel wear high visibility or other suitable clothing when exposed to vehicular traffic.

CES Safety Observes Distracted Driving Awareness Month #TakeBackYourDrive

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Apr 13, 2016 10:30:00 AM

MORE WORKERS ARE KILLED EVERY YEAR IN MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES THAN ANY OTHER CAUSE.

Distracted driving is an epidemic on America’s roadways.  In 2013, 3,154 people were killed and an estimated 424,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.  These statistics are increasing with every year that passes.

Texting and cell phone use behind the wheel takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your focus off driving – putting yourself and others in danger. The National Safety Council observes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to draw attention to this epidemic.

HVAC Quality Installation Specification, ACCA Standard 5 2010

Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Standard 5 details the nationally recognized minimum criteria for the proper installation of HVAC systems in residential and commercial applications.  This Standard applies to HVAC equipment and components being installed in residential and commercial buildings.

The Standard focus areas for quality installation include: design,  equipment installation, distribution, and system documentation and owner education aspects.  Building owners and operators and residential consumers need to be informed of the links between comfort, humidity levels, utility bills, and indoor air quality with a proper HVAC system design and installation.

What to Ask the Contractor when Evaluating HVAC Planned Maintenance

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Jun 25, 2015 1:00:00 PM

Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems

The HVAC system is the single largest user of energy in your building, making it one of your biggest monthly expenditures.  If it is not maintained in proper working order you will be sacrificing indoor comfort while seeing increased power usage, and will likely incur higher repair costs and premature equipment replacement costs.

Florida Building Energy Code Effective July 1, 2015 Requires HVAC Commissioning

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Jun 22, 2015 6:34:00 PM

The fifth edition of the Florida building Code takes effect on July 1, 2015 (click here for analysis paper).

New buildings will have to be 19% more energy efficient when completed to current building design permit requirements.

Additionally, commissioning reports will be required effective July 1, 2015.  New Energy Codes required large HVAC tonnage and buildings that hit the 50% value improvement to bring the entire building up to current code.

The owner becomes a communication hub between the design/construction team and the code official responsible for granting the certificate of occupancy.  Since getting a CO is usually a time critical constraint, it is important that the process not get unintentionally delayed by an owner that isn’t aware that the code mandates their involvement in the process.

#TBT 2010 CES wins 2010 ABC Eagle Awards for HVAC & PLBG -The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™

By Comprehensive Energy Services on Jun 11, 2015 4:46:00 PM

Each year the Central Florida Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., sponsors a special awards competition for commercial and industrial contractors to recognize the outstanding craftsmanship, planning, and coordination efforts to produce the superb construction projects being built by Central Florida ABC member firms.

The Excellence in Construction Awards consists of two programs. The first program is designed for general contractors, who enter the entire construction project, which may consist of a single building; multiple buildings and projects, such as a resort; an interior build-out; or a renovation of an existing building.

The specialty contractors also compete for their achievements in their specific trade. The project entries they submit are judged on outstanding coordination efforts, challenges successfully overcome, project complexity, custom materials, and the quality of individual craftsmen accomplishments for each submitted project.

Each project is evaluated by a panel of judges represented by a cross-section of the industry, including local design professionals who either visit and tour each project or determine the score based on a presentation and awards entry book.
